Dr. Alexander E. Weingarten

Alexander Weingarten, MD, co-director has been practicing pain management since 1984, is Board Certified in Anesthesiology and has been elected as a fellow of the American Academy of Pain Medicine.  In addition he has met the requirements for the American Board of Anesthesiology subspecialty certification in Pain Management.

Co-Medical Director

Dr Weingarten engages in all modalities of pain management with expertise in implantable technologies (morphine pump and spinal cord stimulators), fluoroscopic guided needle placement, radiofrequency ablation, percutaneous laser discectomy and epiduralysis and reflex sympathetic dystrophy.  Dr Weingarten is an attending anesthesiologist at Northwell Health at Syosset Hospital, Day-Op Center of Long Island and North Queens Surgical Center in Bayside.

He is a member of the anesthesia department of Nassau University Medical  Center and trains resident physicians in pain management.  Dr Weingarten recently co-authored a chapter entitled “The Pathophysiology of Pain” as part of a text entitled Proving Pain and Suffering.

Dr. Matthew Spiegel

Dr. Matthew Spiegel believes that what truly matters is not just a long life but an active one as well. He began his career modeling nerve fiber action potentials at the NYU Courant Institute for Mathematical Sciences. He then went to the NYU Grossman School of Medicine where he spent a year researching spinal alignment, spine related therapies and health-related quality of life outcomes. During his training at the NYU Grossman School of Medicine, Dr. Spiegel treated numerous demographic cohorts while rotating through NYU Tisch Hospital, Bellevue Hospital and the Manhattan VA. Dr. Spiegel completed his anesthesia residency at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center, where he rotated frequently through the renowned Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS). Dr. Spiegel concluded his formal training with an interventional pain fellowship at Northwell Health and The Spine & Pain Institute of New York. Most recently, Dr. Spiegel spent his time as co-Director of interventional pain at NuHealth/Nassau University Medical Center, expanding the program, teaching residents, and serving the community.

Dr. Spiegel’s focus on interventional pain management is seen in his clinical research, which covers numerous topics ranging from perioperative outcomes, spinal alignment, intrathecal dose delivery systems and neuromodulation. Dr. Spiegel is published in numerous peer reviewed journals & textbooks and continues to present his work nationally and internationally. 

Co-Medical Director

Today, Dr. Spiegel focuses on the treatment of debilitating low back and neck pain, particularly as caused by spinal stenosis, arthritis, degenerative disc disease and refractory pain following spine surgery. Dr. Spiegel has expertise in complex regional pain syndrome, refractory headaches, facial pain, abdominopelvic pain, cancer pain and more. His technical skills include ultrasound and fluoroscopic guided procedures such as epidural steroid injections, joint injections, and radiofrequency ablations. Dr. Spiegel is experienced in more advanced procedures, such as spinal cord stimulation, vertebral augmentation, interspinous spacers, regenerative medicine and more.

Dr. Spiegel believes that adequate pain treatment involves a multifaceted understanding. His philosophy is that it’s not only how many years one lives, but that it’s crucial that they be good years. Dr. Spiegel obtains enormous satisfaction in leading his patients to better, pain free, tomorrows.

In his free time, Dr. Spiegel is an avid skier. He is also fluent in Hebrew and speaks basic Spanish.

Dr. BENJAMIN PORTAL

Dr. Benjamin Portal grew up in Long Island, NY and graduated Cum Laude with a BA in Economics and a minor in Chemistry at Queens College and was inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society. Dr. Portal earned his medical degree from New York Medical College in Valhalla, NY.  He completed his anesthesia residency at Montefiore Medical Center in Bronx, NY and an Interventional Pain Management Fellowship at Albany Medical Center in Albany, NY. There he was trained in cutting-edge minimally invasive image-guided treatments of spine, nerve, and joint pain.  He is an active member of the American Society of Anesthesia, American Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine, American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians, Spine Interventional Society, and American Medical Association.

Dr. Portal delivers care through minimally invasive procedures to patients seeking to avoid surgery or who are deemed not to be surgical candidates. His areas of expertise include image-guided procedures for the non-surgical management of neck, mid-back, low back, shoulder, knee and hip pain including epidural steroid injections, lumbar and cervical percutaneous discectomy, medial branch blocks, radio-frequency ablation, joint injections, spinal cord stimulation, peripheral nerve stimulation, ultrasound-guided nerve blocks, PRP injections, trigger point injections and much more.

GIL MARTINEZ PA-C

Gil Martinez PA-C has been practicing medicine for eleven years. He has over ten years of experience in pain management. He graduated from Stony Brook University in 2007 with a Bachelor of Science in Biology. He then received his Physician Assistant degree from Touro College in 2011. He is proficient in medication management, trigger point and joint injections as well as Botox for chronic migraine treatment. He has genuine care towards all patients and exercises his passion for medicine in striving to find the best interventional treatments and physical therapy. In his downtime he enjoys spending time with his family, trying new foods, traveling and jet skiing.
